Herculaneum and Vesuvius in One Day: How to Plan It

Updated:

Red-painted columns and walls of the House of the Telephus Relief seen from above

Herculaneum sits at the foot of Vesuvius, and the volcano is the reason the town survives as an archaeological site. A day that includes both is realistic because Tiqets sells a Vesuvius ticket with a Vesuvio Express round trip from Ercolano. We keep the Vesuvius side general: we did not verify details such as hours, paths or weather rules, so check them with the Vesuvius National Park and on Tiqets before you go.

What can I book?

These are third-party products from our partner Tiqets, so read each one for inclusions and times.

How to plan the day

  1. Start at Herculaneum. It opens at 8:30. In winter the last entry is 15:30 and the park closes at 17:00; in summer the last entry is 18:00.
  2. Pick your Vesuvius slot from the Tiqets product and check its meeting point and time.
  3. Keep a margin for the return trip, and remember that the train to Naples leaves from Ercolano Scavi. See the getting there guide.

If you can only choose one ancient town, read Herculaneum or Pompeii and our visit tips.

Can I visit Herculaneum and Vesuvius on the same day?

It is possible, since there is a Vesuvius round trip that starts from Ercolano. Check the opening hours and conditions of both tickets before you book.

How long does the Vesuvius excursion from Ercolano take?

The Tiqets product with the Vesuvio Express from Ercolano is listed as a 3-hour experience.

Is the Vesuvius ticket included with Herculaneum?

No. Vesuvius is a separate attraction with its own ticket.
